There has been a great deal of research conducted over the years on trying to define clearly what makes a good teacher. The C IV in training and assessment is also an attempt to define (in this case) the competencies of an excellent teacher. How well do you think it achieves this? Personally I believe there are a lot of qualities left out of the competencies which are essential to have to be a competent and effective teacher/trainer. This has occurred due to the limitations of the competency framework in expressing subjective qualities such as passion etc. If you take the line that teaching is an art that develops over time then you can see why it is difficult to define. It is like trying to define what is a great book or why a certain painting is better than another. I am interested in your own theories as to what is a good teacher. To get you thinking about this check out this short slideshow which contains a collection of viewpoints.
