As trainers we have to be good at setting goals and often we have to train students how to set goals. I think it is one of those fundamental skills that everyone should be good at and be able to utilise throughout their life. As a trainer you have to be even better than most in this area as you will often need to assist learners to create learning goals. Setting an assessment is in a sense setting a goal for the students to complete.

Unfortunately what often surprises me is how many trainers/teachers are very poor at setting goals for  themselves. They can be quite effective at helping learners but they are terrible at setting their own goals and achieving them. One of those ineffective goal setting areas is your own personal development. It is true that in most organisations a trainer is probably the most under developed individual in the organisation. I guess it is assumed that they are trainers and hence don’t need development or can look after that themselves. Truth is trainers, teachers and educators spend so much time preparing learning for others and then delivering it they just don’t get around to managing their own learning needs.

So start today. Analyse your learning needs and set some goals. If you don’t know how to set effective goals or you just want a really useful resource for students to use go to this link on goal setting. What are your learning goals going to be?
