Here is a quick little article with heaps of good points about learning design. It is about elearning design but the key points are essentially the same for good learning design of any description. I have been designing a lot of programs lately and here are my key points.
1. Know the target audience – as much as you can.
2. What are the objectives/outcomes of the program? Hopefully there has been some sort of training needs analysis.
3. If you have assessment – write it first.
4. Do your research. Look at all the content sources out there.
5. Break your content into little grabs – 15 mins or less and think activity, activity, activity.
6. Information, activity, information, activity, summary activity.
7. Use powerpoint sparingly – diagrams, graphics.
8. Workbook should be more white space than text.
9. Downloadable support notes. Up to the participant if they want to download it.
10. Fun, competition, problem solving.
11. Read over the finished product carefully. Get someone else to do it as well.
There you go – great training design!
