I was listening to a group of boys on the train yesterday agonising over a test on the periodic table. They were quizzing each other and one boy in particular was getting more wrong then right. I wanted to lean over any say, don’t worry about it you’ll most likely never use the table again. I didn’t do it though because this is the educational path they must follow. What a pointless exercise. I still remember some of the abbreviations on the table but I never really had to use that knowledge for anything except in a trivial pursuit like quiz. I thought they would have dropped exams like this but no, it appears this is still part of the curriculum. I was doing that quiz, at school 35 years ago.
