Overseas internet is crap!

My apologies for not sending out the regular posts but I have been traveling overseas and there is still a lot to do in regards to international internet connection. Because the travel has been constant there hasn’t been much time to sit down, connect to the net and type up posts. The cost overseas for connecting is ridiculous and as I found out the other day my email  download blew out my download quota within minutes. Current rate where I am now is $25 per 10mb over one hour. If you exceed the 10mb the speed is then reduced to a crawl. My iPhone is next to useless here as the cost for international roaming is very high. Even the provider suggests you turn it off. Why is this so complicated? I actually don’t think it is. It’s just rampant money making by the usual suspects in Australia, and I am sure it happens in every country. In Australia in particular we pay way too much for internet connection and often it is of a poor quality. Let’s hope that one day they all get their act together and you can seamlessly travel the world with low cost internet and phone services. This rant is connected to training and education as the future of broadband cost and connection is closely linked to the future of our education and training systems and our ability to compete in the global economy. Especially due to our vast distances we will continue to rely on fast, effective communication systems to remain competitive. In my last post I wrote about how we are falling behind in ePortfolio development. EPortfolios rely on the Internet and cloud computing. It is just one example of educational technology that already exists that many can not access due to our inability to get super fast broadband operating for the majority of its citizens. Please read this post to see what training predictions even 2010 holds and how many are effected by the Internet.

Ok rant over. I am back in Australia now. Good to be back.
