Today’s post is another by guest blogger, Christine Dix.
My first class at my current workplace was an evening class conducted at a different venue (the local primary school computer lab). I was nervous – first class, new workplace, unseen venue! I had dressed carefully in my business suit as we were encouraged to dress professionally. The class went well.
A couple of years later, one of my students took me aside to thank me. She said that I had been her tutor for her first class and she had been feeling very nervous and insecure returning to study after time at home with children. When I walked into the room she was intimidated by my professional appearance and was ready to give up before she had even started. Then she looked down and realised that I was wearing joggers with my business suit and suddenly she was comfortable with me, the class and returning to study.
I realised that it had also been my first class. I was wearing joggers simply because I have a lot of trouble with my feet and had decided that comfort was more important to my teaching than professional image.
She was an excellent student and went on to complete Certificate III in Business Administration.
I think that is the only time I was glad my feet hurt!
