I have attended Education conferences for twenty plus years and essentially they talk about the same things. The speakers are often very good but the message is the same. Are they wrong or is the audience not listening. Collaboration. Innovation. Cooperation. Change. Unfortunately last week my perception was that people liked what they heard (not all of them) but they just couldn’t be bothered doing something about it. I was in a packed room of educators and administrators (more of them unfortunately) and the majority were over 50 (that includes me). We are not the group to change education and training. We are also not the group who should have been there. Another frustration was the number of over 50 participants talking about what young people need to learn and how they should learn it. Yes, we may have wisdom based on years of experience but the world has changed and I have no idea what young people think, feel, want or need and I severely doubt that many in the room did either. If I was a school educator I would be doing a lot more listening than talking. How about an educational conference where the speakers are all in school.
Rant now completed.
