Follow-up to What Makes a Good Teacher?

The survey results are in and from 26 respondents the following summary outlines the key results.

The basic survey question was, How important are these qualities? The very important column revealed the following

  1. Passion – 69.2%
  2. Ability to inspire – 65.4%
  3. Emotional intelligence – 50%
  4. Creative – 34.6%
  5. Experience – 50%
  6. Model professional behaviours – 53.8%
  7. Ability to learn and improve – 69.2%
  8. Balance customer needs and outcomes – 34.6%
  9. Knowledge of topic – 61.5%
  10. Competence as set down by the C IV – 34.6%

Only, balance customer needs and outcomes, and the quality – competence as set down by the C IV had any votes in the Not important grouping.

From the four qualities that had above 60%, are all learnable, achievable qualities except for passion. Which brings me back to an old question I have raised before if you don’t have passion, can you get it? Passion is critical. It does rely on a range of factors but of it is not there for the job then you need to find out why and examine the root causes of what is stopping your passion and eliminate it. A passionless trainer is like a corked bottle of wine. It looks good, sounds good, the packaging is professional and it probably cost you a lot but inside it is vinegar. Bitter, off and useless.
