Secondary school students in South Australia have to develop a personal learning plan as part of their program. To assist with this every secondary school student has been given access to a free ePortfolio system which will aid this process and develop a range of other abilities. The interesting thing is that it is not accessible after they leave school failing the life long learning test. But it is a start. In New Zealand all students have access to a free ePortfolio which can be maintained after school. Anyone who has read this blog knows that I am a big supporter of ePortfolios and this is encouraging from at least one state but we really need to start to think about systems that are life long and accessible at all times. I was lucky enough to have a bit of a play of an iPad recently and was surprised how much I liked it. Mainly as a portable system in the house. It’s good to read on as well. I watched this video today and it suddenly occurred to me that every person with a portable Internet device (iPad or other) could build and access their own portfolio anytime, anywhere as well as learn constantly anytime, anywhere and where did this leave the teacher andor trainer. This is here now and it will only get better, faster and easier to use. What doors does it open for education? Do we have the skills and motivation to move with this change? This is what the next generation will expect you to use in the classroom or for that matter while not in the classroom.
