Can trainers be good public speakers?

I often get asked for advice on how to make a good speech from trainers. This used to surprise me as I used to think that if you can stand in front of a group of people and train them then of course you could make a good speech. There are many aspects of training and speech making that are similar but there are some subtle differences. Speeches are generally short, to the point and have no interaction. Now you would think that for a trainer this would be just a slight change in what they normally do for a job. I think the fear and apprehension comes from the word by word structure, the focus of attention and the lack of interaction. The key is to utilise your trainer skills such as communication, sequencing of content and introduction, body, conclusion approach. Then the big difference is working out your 3 to 5 key points and working out exactly what you need to say to achieve your purpose, ie to entertain, convince, sell etc. Here is a short blog post which may help you if you have to make a public speech. Read the related articles on the left of the posts screen. They are all helpful.
